Grief counsellors will be available at C.R. Gummow Public School starting on Wednesday following the death of former student Chazz Petrella. The 12-year-old attended various schools in the Cobourg area, with Gummow being the last. He took his own life last Thursday morning.
Judy Malfara, communications officer with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, said on Monday that "counsellors will remain at the school, once classes resume, as long as they are needed."
Students and families who wish to speak with a counsellor at the school on Wednesday don't need to call ahead to set a specific time. They can drop in at a time that's convenient to them between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Gummow principal Alison Kneen said, "we also will work with students to find ways to honour Chazz."
"We join all of our families, staff and community in offering Chazz’s family our most heartfelt sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time."
Since Chazz's death there has been an outpouring of sympathy in the community for the Petrella family.
